About Puzzle Bubble

Puzzle Bubble is a delightful game that shall keep you engaged for hours over hours. Unlike many other games, it will not lose it's attractions after playing it several times but will become more challanging and exciting.

It was designed by Seiichi Nakakuki, and released by the gaming franchise Taito Corporation. Two main versions of the game were launched. The first one (which was initially named Bubble Buster and was introduced only in the markets of Japan, by virtue of it being adapted to run on Taito's special B System hardware), was released on June 1994, while the second version of the game (which was created to run on the fifth generation Neo Geo platform and was titled as Puzzle Bobble), was launched into international markets on December 1994.

Outline of game rules, stages and mechanics

  • The game is made after the fashion of other puzzle oriented video games which highlight a central puzzle that needs to be solved by the player. These kinds of games owe their origins to maze games which were a popular form of arcade games in the beginning.
  • Puzzle Bobble is a tile-matching kind of puzzle game. The screen displays an uneven or haphazardly arranged array of blocks.
  • In order to play the game, the player needs to manipulate these blocks (or bubbles in case of the game in question) around the screen.
  • The player is equipped with a pointer which appears at the bottom of a screen. The pointer is used to shoot bubbles onto the pre-existing cluster of bubbles.
  • The pointer generates bubbles of random colours, when these coloured bubbles come in contact with groups of identically coloured bubbles, the new arrivals form groups with the old ones and together, they disappear from the screen, and the player scores points accordingly
  • Another remarkable feature of the game is that some of the bubbles move through the screen and attach themselves to the top of the virtual game arena. With the passage of time, this roof, comes downwards, and bubbles start detaching themselves and dropping to the floor.
  • The player is awarded more points for bubbles that drop, than for bubbles that pop out of sight.
